The elusive treasure that is the Ivory Billed Woodpecker!

The Field Journal of Ivory Bill:

Journal Entry #5:
Another clip, and we think this is the last of the footage from Ivory Billıs venture into the Big Woods. Please pass this along and let me know if youıve heard from him.

Did he know how close he was to finding the woodpecker when he finished this expedition? Is that why he hasnıt returned from the Big Woods? Has he heard about other possible sightings?

Journal Entry #4:
This is video of the last time I spoke with Bill. If only he'd told me exactly where he was at the time ..... and still no sign of the ivory-billed woodpecker. But if you've seen Ivory Bill, please let me know. - Ivorybillsmom@yahoo.com

Journal Entry #3:
We still haven't heard from my boy Bill, but we're hopeful he's still searching for that woodpecker. His cousin has managed to piece together some more of his video. Please watch and contact me if you've seen him - or that bird!

Journal Entry #2:
This is “Ivory” Bill’s mom. We’re very worried about him!! He left for the Big Woods in search of the Ivory Billed Woodpecker, and we haven’t heard from him since! We’ve looked for him, but all we’ve been able to find is his video camera. Please watch the video, and if you recognize him and have seen him, please e-mail me at ivorybillsmom@yahoo.com with any information! We'll make more of his video available as soon as we can!.

Journal Entry #1:
I've been hard at it, chained to the computer all day today. I've got SO much work to do. But I reach a point where if I don't get up and get outside I'm going to go crazy.

So I had a little walk in 99 degree heat. *pant pant pant* Got as far as the cove and found a shady spot to sit down and catch my breath.

I figured it was about time for me to get back to work so I dragged myself up only to hear a burst of bird noise out of an overgrown bushy tree by the path. It happened to be shaped just right so there was a spot I could stick my head almost right into the tree. I was hoping for some warblers or something else exciting. All the tiny birds hid the moment I appeared. I kept my station and stayed still, hoping they might peek back out.

Instead a young Squirrel peered out of a screen of leaves. We stared at each other a few minutes. I still didn't move, so he decided to be bold and stepped into full view.

Feeling quite confident now, he crept along the branch a bit closer to me. An adult hidden in the tree top started barking at him loudly in warning.

Like a typical adolescent, he ignored her and crept a little closer. I grinned at him. He cocked his head curiously and took another step closer. The adult was barking louder. He ventured another step closer and stared hard at me to see what I would do. Finally, he barked back at the adult.

You know what he said, of course. "Shut up, Ma, I'm just fine - SEE!" (I can feel his pain!) I could tell he really wanted to get a bit closer, but his nerves finally failed him. Still keeping an eye on me, he hopped back into the screen of leaves.

Although I love all creatures of the wood, it is my heart’s desire to glimpse the Lord God Bird just once – it haunts my dreams! I feel my upcoming trip to the Big Woods of the Arkansas Delta will prove to be successful ….
